Investigate

Area of Interaction: Community and Service , Approaches to Learning & Human Ingenuity
Significant Concept: Design Cycle can be used to solve problems
Unit Question: How can my learning help my community? How do I make Sound Choices?
My learning will be used help improve my community by expanding the knowledge of those around me and putting my ideas to work. I will teach the 6th graders what the design cycle is and how it is used. I will do this by creating a song or a music video to help others understand or learn what i'm trying to teach.
INVESTIGATE: (Write in complete sentences) Identify the Problem
1. What is the problem you need to solve? Explain to a 6th grader what the design cycle is all about by creating a presentation. (3d, PPT, movie, game, Poster)
We need to be able to explain what the design cycle is to a 6th grader in terms they will understand. By the end of us teaching them, they should know what the design cycle is and how to properly use it.
2. How does the Design Cycle apply to the real world?
The design cycle applies to the real world because by using this process we can teach others and fix problems that arise in our every day lives.
3. How will this project serve my community?
This project will help my community because it will show the 6th graders how to use the design cycle to come up with solutions to problems they might encounter  as they continue to get older.
4. How can my learning help my community?
My learning this can help my community because i can some up with solutions to problems and i can teach others to do so as well.
5. How do we live in relation to each other?
we live as an idea college prep school and community and as a community we are to help eachother solve problems and put new ideas to work.
6. How does this help others?
this helps others by getting their problems fixed as well as possibly learning the design cycle.
7. What are the requirements for this assignment?

8. What is the Design Cycle?

EVALUATION

My learning can serve my community. It can help solve problems about water conservation, recycling, ect. Learning the Design Cycle can help with solving the problems because having background information, identifying the problem, having a plan, putting that plan to action, and then reflecting on how successful we were in following the plan and how well the results came out can help so that anybody who wants to do what you did or something similar can know what to do and what not to do.
In the future my projects can be better. I can plan out my time better and not slack off and forget to do the work until last minute. I can also ask for help when I don't understand. It would be better to ask someone who does know what is going on than someone who has no clue and then it's also a huge mistake to start chatting... yeah, not the best thing I've done. Next time I will cut to the chase and get to work. I need to make this a reference for the future...!
I learned alot about myself and what I will and will not do. I learned that just being straightforward with my peers and not making a big chase out of things is better then making life complicated and difficult. Sadly, I had to learn the hard way. I also learned to really look into the the programs I will use because it may not really do what I need it to do and that I'll have to start over just like this last time. I learned to ask questions when I don't understand and especially to ask the teacher if I need help or if I am unable to complete a task due to lack of materials and possibly time.
My product-just judging the product- is actually really cool, I think, anyways. I like it, but now it's just a question whether or not the 6th graders will like it and learn from it. ------------------------ when I have the rubric in front of me, I will complete this paragraph...
I definitely would have done things differently in this project if I could. I would have planned my time out better and I would have stuck to the plan. I would have written everything down in my planner, which I look at everyday. I would also look into the programs I plan on using before doint the project because I don't want to have to start the whole process over one mistake I could have prevented. Overall, though, the rest of the project was just fine.

Reflection- October 13, 2011

Today I was able to make the survey, but i didn't have time to actually use it: Today in class 6th graders were not available so we had three 7th graders. They were shared and they probably already knew the Design Cycle so I'll just make my sis and her friends stay after school one of these days:) THIS WILL BE FINISHED BY FRIDAY!!  I rate myself a 4 with attitudes in technology because I was really distracted and I need to get ALL the work done.  This is what my broadcast looks like so far in sound cloud.

The Genius Wonderful Script!!:D(complete!!!:)

__________________________________________________________________________________
revised script... well, i need to get to the revising part, i was adding more, but then i realized that it was too long...

Me: Helloooo South Texas! And welcome to The News Today! Today we have a guest to help us learn about the DESIGN CYCLE. Alright, well I know what most of you guys are thinking: “ughh!! This is gonna be soooooooo… boring!!...”  trust me, I was there too, I thought that too. Then I noticed how much learning this process has helped me.  Ok, so my guest speaker today is none other than…*drum roll* Sabrina Camarena!:D

Sabrina: Thanks Michel. Wow, it’s really great to be here. And wow, the Design Cycle. There is so much to know about this. Ok, so what’s the first step?

Me: Ok, well the first step is INVESTIGATE. This basically means that you’ll figure out what the problem really is. In life, and escpecially in tough situations, it's hard to come up with a solution to a problem if you don't have background information about it. In order to fully solve a problem you need to know what the problem is and how you can fix it.

Sabrina: right, so i understand the first step, which is INVESTIGATE, but that's on'y one step in the PROCESS. What comes next?

Michel: OK, well obviously we got the first step covered and now everyone's getting bored. So let's move on. The next step after INVESTIGATE is PLAN.

Sabrina: woah, there. So the next part is PLAN? I thought it was CREATE...

Michel:  No, that comes after PLAN. Let me explain what PLAN is though. PLAN is when you design the product that will solve your problem or you come up with a solution to your problem.

Sabrina: So we have to think of what to do before we do it?! What happened to plain old just doing when the moment comes?

Michel: If you do that then things may not go the way you want them to. If you write your ideas down on paper and then start to put your ideas to action, there's more of a chance that you will get good results.

Sabrina: So when you put your ideas to action that's CREATE, right?

Michel: Right, but remember that when you CREATE you follow the plan. You don't go off and randomly do whatever. You have to follow the plan you CREATED in the first place. This is the reason we have the PLAN part of the Design Cycle.

Sabrina: OK, but what do you CREATE?

Michel: You create the solution to the problem, or the product. Alright, so the final step of the Design Cycle is EVALUATE. All you have to do is EVALUATE 2 things: the product and how well you used the Design Cycle. When you're in this step of the process, ask yourself these questions:
- Did the product work?
- Did I use the Design Cycle the right way?
- What could I have done better?
- What could/ would I have changed?
- How was my attitude throughout this whole project?
- Should it have been different?
- How so?

And that's it! That's all there is to the Design Cycle:)

Sabrina: Wow, well that's all for now folks! Signing off here from Donna, Texas is Sabrina Camarena and Michel Hernandez. Have a good night!

I FINISHED!!! WOOHOOOO!!!! AW, YEAH! I FINISHED I FINISHED OH YEAH YEAH YEAH. NO EATING HERE TONIGHT, NO EATING HERE TONIGHT! YOU'RE ON A DIET!
HEHE, nemo:D

Ok, so today I would rate myself a 3 because I actaully finished most of the work. I just need to record using the other program and then I am done!! Well, not exactly, I would still have to do the reflection on that part. I am almost done:D

Design Brief

 Design Brief

10. Write a short statement of what you are going to make, why you are going to make it, and for whom you are making it.
I am going to make a radio station to teach the 6th graders about the Design Cycle.
Formulate a Design Specification
11. What are the requirements for this assignment?
This assingment requires for me to be creative, think outside the box, use the design cycle, and to make it as simple and understandable as possible.
12. What are the limitations you have with this assignment?
The limit here is the sky, so basically, there is NO LIMIT! Whatever we are able to acomplish is what we can do. We can do any project if we can finish what we started.
13. How will you "test" your project?
I will test my project by recording a show-one of mine- and show it to some 6th graders. I will let them listen to it and then give them a test or a survey to see how much they liked it and how much they actually learned.

I would rate myself a 3 beacause I was kind of listening and paying attention in class, but then I was also partially doing my work. I should start paying attention more and get to work!!

Rating-9/27/11

I rate myself a 3-4 because I described the problem and how important it is. I mentioned how the goal of this project is to teach 6th graders about the design cycle and that is very important so that they may learn how to solve problems on their own. I looked through the sources somewhat and analyzed some of the information. I did not look through all the information, which I should have done. I also did not describe how I would evaluate my success. I need to get to work..

Spreaker-the paragraphs

I gave Spreaker a 5 on simplicity because the layout was simple and didn't complicate anything when I went exploring on the website. It gave me a list of genres to choose from that I might want to listen to or that I might want to post. It also gave me a simple step by step on how to set up my profile which helped because then I never would have been able to figure it out. There are step by step instructions for everything and you will not get lost when using this program. The instructions are clear in all the different things you can do, like customize your profile and add new music. The layout doesn't complicate anything, because it is very simple.

I gave Spreaker a ___ on music. The music on this program is easy to add and easy to get a hold of to listen to. This is all accesable to you but you need to have an account, which is free. Instead of music it's mostly just a bunch of podcasts and radio shows. You get a large range of genres from music to art and history. It can not only be used for music but for educational purposes as well. There is a wide range of genres to look through, which makes this useful for things other than music.

I gave this program a 3 on color. The color on this website is basically the same as the other website;  it hardly has any. It only has green, white, black and orange. It needs more color and maybe it would get more hits and would be more popular. It would attract more people to it and would catch their attention. Adding more color would help me focus on what's important and help the stuff that needs to be seen stand out more.

I rated this program a 4 on entertainment because there was not only music, but there were also radio talk shows and podcasts. Some were for entertainment and others were for educational purposes. There are different types of genres like art, poetry, sports, and much more. There are podcasts, music, and radio shows for all types of subjects. With a large range of subjects and opportunities it's bound to keep the person hooked. You can be entertained for hours. Although this program is good, it has some limitations. Sometimes the podcast or song might cut off in the middle.

Spreaker

Garage Band-Tool 1

I gave Garage Band a 5 on simplicity because it is really easy to work and to manage. The layout is not difficult to go through and making your own song or recording is simple and free. It's easy to record what you want and to edit. Overall, the program was fairly simple to use.
The reason I rated Garage Band 4.5 on the music is because after you record you chose where you want it to start playing. The only difficulty I had was when I tried to stop recording. I eventually found out that I was still recording when Eblihm told me..
One good thing about this program is that you can record various types of music and it is easy to edit. The music style isn't limited, but many various kinds, meaning you can record whatever you want, even if it's only you goofing around:)
I gave Garage Band a 3 on color because they son't have alot of it, but it still looks professional.  In my opinion they need to add a little more color to attract people to, but to still look professional. It would make it look alot more creative and it may be used more. Because of the lack of color, and possibly the lack of advertisement, this program and website are not as well known, of common, as Pandora or Youtube.
I rated Garage Band a 5 on entertainment because alot of people, like myself, like to record their own music and later on publicise it.  Music might help a person concentrate and get their work done. It will help some be calmed down enough to be able to work and be less distracted. It definitely kept me busy long enough to want to figure out how things worked on there. I wanted to continue working and messing around with the program and learn everything about it. I enjoyed it and learned alot about the program.

Today I rate myself a 3 because I was mostly on task, but I ocassionally got off topic when I asked questions and then started a conversation. I should really start paying attention. I should really stop talking to Ashley during class. She is a big distraction. Well, Ashley, Jose, and Sammy. But they're funny:) aww, you gotta love em.

Investigation Reflection

Today I chose to do a radio station. I got the idea from Mrs. Hinojosa's blog while looking under music in cooltoolsforschools. I started to sign up for one of the programs called blip but i wasn't able to finish. I need to come up with the second program i want to choose. i was looking around the web and found several different programs that i might be able to work with. i knew i wasn't gonna have time to look at the other progrmas so i wrote down the websites to look at them at home later.
i am going to go to all the websites and look at the ones that may be possible candidates and choose two that i will use for this project. i will then make a table based on simplicity and i will evaluate both programs and continue with the process.

I would rate myself a 4 in Attitudes in technology because I actually got some work done! Yay!! Well, I actually got an idea of what I am going to do. Earlier I was all over the place with the confusion of what I was going to do. Now I got it covered, so I'm good:)

Attitude

ATTITUDE:
27. Reflect on your attitude on each step of the Design Cycle. Did you completely answer each step without complaining, being a whiny baby, or saying "it's too hard". Explain your answer:
28. What grade do you deserve on your attitude? (1 - 6)
